If you follow my Instagram accounts (@lifewithlaurenb and @lovegrace_calligraphy) you would know that I recently painted some canvases to hang in our hall bathroom. I’ve had a vision to paint some canvases and switch them out throughout the year based on the season and I finally finished 2 of them for spring and summer. I’m definitely going to make more than just 2 per season and switch them out whenever I feel like it! It’s a fun reason to just paint and then have somewhere to put those paintings!
For a lot of our other canvases in our home, I have done a really easy diy wood frame but I wanted to have the frames for these canvases to be real picture frames and not the typical canvas floating frame. I also didn’t want to get custom frames for them and wanted it to be a simple process. The issue with canvases and real picture frames is that the canvases are thicker than the inlay for the picture frame. I thankfully found a simple DIY fix for this issue and successfully used it for this project!
After researching easy ways to frame a canvas with a regular picture frame, I found that small brackets would work best. There are different sizes and I bit the bullet with buying one where reviews said they worked for similar uses. The canvases I used were a bit thinner than some canvases but still thicker than the picture frames. The brackets were a bit too big but I made them work.
I got both the picture frames and backing clip brackets from Amazon. I am not sure where else you could get those type of brackets so I do suggest searching Amazon to see what types would work best for you and the picture frame your using.
I screwed the brackets into the back (we had screws but you can easily get a package of screws from Home Depot or Lowes!) and that’s when I noticed there was still room between the brackets and the canvas. I just ripped up some pieces of cardboard from a box we had that was going to be recycled and fit them snug between the bracket and canvas. That was it! So simple and will be so easy to change out the canvas as well!
