I know a lot of people can be very specific about their skincare and makeup while pregnant but I will admit I wasn’t overly obsessed with getting new products specifically pregnancy safe. I asked my doctor at my first appointment and it was not something she was hugely concerned with and just said (like you will find everywhere) that you cannot use retinol…which I never used anyway. Just remember, to always, always, check with your doctor. Every doctor is different and will suggest different things for you and you specifically that may not pertain to me so do not take what I use whole heartedly!
I don’t wear makeup often to begin with since skincare is more important to me now but thankfully, a lot of the skincare I used daily was already tested pregnancy safe or was not an issue to use while pregnant. I kept my routine pretty much the same with a few updates and changes.
The biggest issue with my skin while pregnant is that it is soooo dry. I have combo skin and so far during pregnancy, I can’t believe how I can produce almost no oil throughout the day. Not even the smallest bit on my nose or anything. It’s wild to me! In the winter, my skin naturally gets a bit more dehydrated and dull but pregnancy and winter was a whole new level. My skin would be flaking off with no oil at all in a day and no amount of moisturizer helped it. I started using a face oil in my routine which I would have never been able to use prior and it definitely helped.
By the way, I have a post all about my skincare favorites in my 30’s and I how use them if you want to see a non-pregnant routine.
Face Skincare Routine
My morning skincare routine has stayed pretty much the same to pre-pregnancy:
Tatcha Oil Cleanser
Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask for under eyes
Summer Fridays CC Me Vitamin C Serum (some days)
The Ordinary Moisturizer for face
Summer Fridays Cloud Dew Moisturizer for neck and chest
My evening skincare routine has some additions and updates to it specifically for my dry skin:
Tatcha Oil Cleanser
Farmacy Honeyglow Serum (maybe once a week or not at all)
Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask for under eyes and neck
The Ordinary Moisturizer for face
Summer Fridays Heavenly Sixteen All In One Face Oil for face and neck
I clearly have a problem with being obsessed with Summer Fridays products and with one of the founders being a mom herself, the products are pregnancy safe. (But remember to still always check with your doctor) I use them so much because they really do work for me and have worked pre-pregnancy and now while pregnant! The heavenly face oil was an addition that I never thought my skin would accept but it has immensely helped with the dryness on my face without clogging pores.
I rarely use my Ole Henriksen toner or Farmacy serum because it would be too much for my already dry skin but there are days where I know I need a chemical exfoliant to get all that dead skin off or a toner to really clean my pores. Now that the temperatures are slightly rising and no longer in the single digits, I think I can add my Farmacy serum or Ole Henriksen toner back into my night time routine one or two times a week.
Body Skincare Routine
I have always been someone who hates putting lotion on because I hate the feeling it leaves on the palms of my hands. Along with my face being dry, my skin is also so extremely dry and itchy that I have been slathering on lotion all over my body my entire pregnancy. My lower back, quads, and shins have specifically been the driest and itchiest.I have been using a few different kinds but have been loving them all!
Summer Fridays Summer Skin Nourishing Lotion for body
Summer Fridays Babymoon Belly Balm for belly at night
Mustela Maternity Stretch Marks Cream for morning
Lux Unfiltered No28 for body exfoliating and body polish
Lux Unfiltered No32 for self tanning lotion
Nemah Scar Lotion
I received the Lux Unfiltered bundle for my birthday in December that includes the self tanning lotion, body lotion, and body polish in one and it is a really great bundle! The lotion is also a great body lotion option to use! The Summer Fridays body lotion smells like summer so some winter days it is a nice scent to have but it’s alost a great light scent to have on your body all summer long.
I like to self tan in the winter when I have events to go to wear a shirt that shows my arms because it brings some life back to me but it is clearly not a necessary step for pregnancy skincare- just a little self indulgence during it to make you feel good!
I recently purchased the Nemah scar lotion specifically for my surgery scars so I do not have a true opinion with results on it yet but it is now part of my routine. Nemah was created by influencer, Mary Lawless Lee who is a mom herself and created the lotion specifically to help with C-section scars!
